Kanbaru Suruga, possessor of the Monkey's Paw, is one of the few recognized faces left at Naoetsu Private High School now that Koyomi Araragi and Hitagi Senjougahara have graduated. When she starts hearing reports about a strange entity known as the "Devil" who can miraculously cure any problem, she assumes they are about her and resolves to go into it. She learns that the Devil is actually Rouka Numachi, a former junior high competitor who is offering free advise to individuals who seek her out now that she is unable to play basketball due to a leg injury. As a misfortune collector, she likes reducing her clients' tension by giving them the false promise of having a better future.
