Life is peaceful and unpretentious in Sotoba, a little village where everyone knows everyone. However, tragedy comes when Megumi Shimizu, a young girl with great hopes, dies abruptly from an unknown disease. As additional mysterious fatalities occur throughout the hamlet during the hot summer months, the town's doctor, Toshio Ozaki, begins to think that something more sinister than a simple sickness is at work.
