Hange Zo is determined to capture a titan specimen on the Survey Corps' 49th recon trip. Despite not having received permission from Commander Erwin Smith, Hange rides out alone to meet a titan sighted in adjacent forestland. She recklessly entices it out by asking the giant countless questions and putting her life in danger for the sake of her studies. However, this titan's behavior is out of the ordinary. It soon turns around and returns to the woods, directing Hange to a certain location. Hange stumbles into the legacy of former scout Ilse Langnar. Despite her death, she leaves behind a crucial piece of knowledge that might help titan research—a journal detailing her final days.
